FLINT, MI— Leroy Nesbit, Jr., age 63, passed away on June 20, 2011. Among Mr. Nesbit’s many accomplishments, he will be fondly remembered as a great advocate and strong voice for the working people of Flint. He lived the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People”—in both his personal and professional life, and proudly wore his loyalty to Dort Federal Credit Union, serving 36 years of leadership in the credit union movement.
Leroy was a force of energy and constant enthusiasm. He worked tirelessly to ensure that our area residents, as well as consumers across the country, had access to the benefits of credit unions. His efforts included numerous visits to Capitol Hill where he met with legislators and their staff on important issues. During his tenure on the Dort Federal Board of Directors, Leroy also served on numerous boards and committees including World Council of Credit Unions, National President of the Council of GM Credit Unions, Afro American Credit Union Coalition, and the Combined Council of Automotive Credit Unions. More locally, Leroy volunteered his time to enhance the Greater Flint community through his membership in Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC., the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Michigan Travel Commission, and the Disability Network.
Leroy’s dedicated service to Dort Federal Credit Union contributed to the strong, financially secure credit union Dort Federal is today. During his 36 years of service, Leroy was Credit Committee Chairman, Chairman of the Personnel Committee, Chairmen of the Development Committee, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, and served as a member of the Community Involvement Committee. Leroy’s also held the executive Board positions of First Vice Chair, Second Vice Chair, Treasurer, and most recently, Secretary. Leroy was active with the Michigan Credit Union League serving as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the MCUL Annual Meeting, and the League’s Legislative Committee. He was an honored recipient of the Pete Crear Lifetime Achievement Award as well as a member of the Michigan Credit Union League Hall of Fame. Additionally, Leroy received the Bergengren Award and the Filene and Raiffeisen certificates with the MCUL Volunteer Achievement Program.
On behalf of the Dort Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, Chairman Harry Awdish remarked, “Leroy’s passion for our members and for the credit union movement remained constant even in his most challenging days while battling what seemed to be many health issues. It was only on a rare occasion that Leroy would miss a board meeting, or any other credit union function. Leroy will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and by those whose lives he improved throughout his prolific work as a Dort Federal Credit Union board member.”
Leroy is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn, daughter Jacqueline, his family and many friends.
